The Garden of Solitary Meditation, Zuiho-in Temple, Kyoto
Since there is no water in the karesansui dry landscape garden, the water is suggested by various patterns, drawn on sand with utmost precision. The visual impact is very powerful because this technique suggests “frozen moments” like water drop waves (maru‐uzu-mon), or tall, stormy waves, represented with a pattern called aranami [荒波] “stormy sea".
That’s the pattern used inside the Garden of Solitary Meditation from Zuiho-in, Kyoto, one of the most complex Zen gardens I have seen until now…
