Hiroshima can be translated as “wide island” and it seems to refer to the fact that the island where the castle sits was the largest of the 5 islands made by the Ōta River…


However, the history records another explanation: according to the legend, in 1589, when the lord Mōri Terumoto established Hiroshima by constructing the castle, he named the place by using “Hiro“, from Ōe no Hiromoto, one of the Mori family ancestors and “Shima“, from Fukushima Yamato no Kami Motonaga, the vassal who selected the location…
